Visit il Duomo

There are a number of attractions in the Duomo complex, each with a different ticket. Combination tickets are available. Here is a quick rundown to give you an idea of what you might like to see. Check our tickets section at the bottom for the right combination ticket for you!

Visit il Duomo

Duomo

The interior of the church is just as impressive as the exterior thanks to the towering marble columns and huge, brightly coloured stained-glass windows. There aren’t many gothic churches in Italy so stained glass is something of a rarity, however the duomo is the champion. The interior is decorated with literally thousands of statues, the most striking is that of St Bartholomew, who was flayed alive. Patron saint to tanners, he is always portrayed with a knife and his skin, this statue of him is particularly unnerving.

The Duomo is open every day 9am to 7pm (last entry at 6.10 pm)

Duomo Museum

The Duomo museum is located inside the Royal Palace in Piazza del Duomo 12, on the ground floor. There are 26 exhibition rooms displaying works of art originally from the Duomo statues, stained-glass windows, paintings, tapestries, architectural models, terracottas and plaster casts. The museum is organised chronologically so you can learn about its different phases from its foundation in 1386 right through to the 20th century. The museum is dimly lit and perhaps not the best part of the Cathedral complex for kids.

The Duomo Museum is open every day from 9am to 6pm and is CLOSED on Wednesdays

SAN GOTTARDO

Also included in the ticket is the church of San Gottardo in Corte which is accessed through a small courtyard off the stained-glass room. Originally the Ducal Chapel, it is located inside the palace. It was built by the infamous ruler of Milan, Azzone Visconti in 1330 and dedicated to the patron saint of gout. The styles have changed over time and the church is rather humble in size and decoration but the octagonal bell tower is in Lombard gothic and was the first clocktower of its era.

San Gottardo is open daily from 9am to 6pm and CLOSED on Wednesdays

SAN GOTTARDO

Archaeological Area

Below the duomo are the remains of the churches destroyed by fire and then replaced by the duomo; the Basilica of Santa Tecla and the ruins of a Christian baptistery from the 4th century. In the centre of the baptistery is a large octagonal font, this was a pool for baptism where St Ambrose, an important figure to the Milanese baptised Saint Augustine in 387 AD.

The Archaeological Area is open daily from 9am to 6pm and CLOSED on Wednesdays

Roof terrace

There aren’t many Cathedrals in the world where you can clamber on the roof! The top level of the duomo is definitely worth a visit, not only for the novelty but also the spectacular views. On a clear day you can see the Alps over a hundred miles away from the top of the duomo. Visiting the roof of the Duomo is popular with kids as they can run around and exploreThere is a walkway around the top that enables a closer look at the spires and ornate carving that covers the building and you will find tiny private courtyards with statues that have no entrances, it is a stone wonderland. There are 250 steps to the top or a short elevator ride, there is an added cost for the elevator (see Ticket prices below). In adverse conditions the roof terrace might close.

The Roof Terrace is open every day 9am to 7pm (last entry is at 4pm)

Il Duomo di Milano is open every day Monday to Sunday 9am – 7pm (final entry 6.10pm)
